Mobile App

Taking a Physical Card Game into the Digital World

SmashedUK

Project Summary

Originally sold as a physical card game through Etsy, SmashedUK was transformed into a fully interactive mobile app by CoreTechnics. Built using Flutter and powered by a SMART API backend, the app combines social gameplay, in-app purchases, progression systems and account management within a scalable platform that continues to evolve.

SmashedUK began life as a physical card game sold through Etsy. The concept had already built a loyal audience, but Becky wanted to take the game further and make it accessible to a much larger audience through a mobile app.

The challenge was not simply recreating a card game digitally. The app needed to capture the same energy and social interaction as the physical version while also meeting the strict requirements of modern app stores. CoreTechnics was responsible for the entire process, from design and development through to launch and ongoing support.

The result was a feature-rich mobile experience that successfully brought the game into the digital era while creating opportunities for future growth and expansion.

From physical cards to a mobile experience

Moving from a physical product to a digital app required more than simply displaying cards on a screen. The app needed to feel engaging, responsive and fun while retaining the spirit of the original game.

CoreTechnics worked closely with Becky to translate the existing gameplay into a digital experience. Animated interactions, score tracking, progression systems and themed decks helped create an experience that felt native to mobile while remaining true to the original concept.

The result allows groups of players to enjoy the game together using a single device, making it accessible whether users are at home, at a party or travelling.

Navigating App Store challenges

One of the more interesting challenges involved the App Store review process. As the original concept was built around a drinking game, careful consideration was required to ensure the app met Apple's guidelines.

Rather than focusing solely on drinking mechanics, the product evolved into a broader social icebreaker experience. This approach retained the humour, interaction and gameplay that made the original product successful while creating a more inclusive experience that could appeal to a wider audience.

The adjustment ultimately strengthened the product and helped create a platform with broader long-term potential.

Built for growth from day one

The mobile application was built using Flutter, providing a modern and responsive user experience. Behind the scenes, a SMART-powered API handles authentication, gameplay data, purchases and content management.

Users can sign in using Google or Apple accounts, access multiple card decks, unlock premium content through in-app purchases and track their progress through XP rewards and interactive scoreboards.

A growing library of rules, deck content and gameplay mechanics gives the platform flexibility as new ideas and expansions are introduced.

Supporting the app after launch

Unlike many app projects that end after release, SmashedUK continues to be actively hosted, supported and maintained by CoreTechnics. New features, content updates and improvements are already planned as the platform evolves.

A dedicated debugging section was built directly into the application, allowing API connectivity, account systems and other platform features to be monitored and tested more effectively. This provides valuable operational insight and helps simplify ongoing support and maintenance.

The project demonstrates how a simple physical product can evolve into a scalable digital platform with opportunities for recurring revenue, community growth and future feature development.
